Soft skills as an object of teaching in tertiary education and as an integral part of future teachers’ professional and personal development
Abstract
Tertiary education is supposed to play an important role in the development of students’ soft skills, including their capacity for self-development in intellectual and social directions. Creativity, critical thinking, ability to learn, ability to cooperate and communicate are the basic soft skills in the 21st century. The interpretation of the term «soft skills» is given in the article; the most significant soft skills for a teacher are highlighted. The article contains the analysis of official documents regulating the functions of in-service teachers and pre-service teachers in general, and teachers of foreign languages in particular. Introducing teaching soft-skills into tertiary education should be supported on both governmental and non-governmental levels. Although the definition and the list of soft skills are various, common tendencies are as follows – skills and competencies connected with knowledge, cognitive skills, emotional and social competencies.
